It’s summer, and that means your air conditioner is probably running more than any other time of the year. In Florida, we depend on our air conditioning systems to keep us comfortable and safe, but what happens whey they stop working?  Besides feeling discomfort and frustration, you might be a little worried, and you probably have some questions.  What will this cost?  How long will it take to fix the situation? What if I can’t afford a new system?  Can air conditioners be repaired?  The short answer is yes. In many cases, a repair can get you back to the comfort of a cool house, and there are even ways you can keep your system up to snuff and recognize small issues before they become big problems.

Troubleshooting your system before you need a repair

cleaning with white vinegarYou know how important an ounce of prevention is, and it’s no different for HVAC systems. There are simple steps you can take to keep your cool air flowing. For instance, check and replace the batteries in your thermostat; you wouldn’t believe how many service calls end up with a simple battery change.  Dust can build up and put a strain on your system, so make sure your air filters are clean, and replace them every three months (experts recommend that homes with pets replace them every two months). You can also keep your drain line clean and clear of clogs with white vinegar and a wet vac.  Take a peek at just how easy it is.

Red flags to look for before a system shutdownair conditioner compressor

Even the best HVAC systems will have issues that require a service call.  Often, your system will send out some warning signs that it’s having problems before it shuts down.  Unpleasant odors can let you know that something is not right, as can any new or unfamiliar noise from your compressor unit.  Also, a system which is struggling to function tends to have lessened or weak air flow, or it will circulate warm air.  Finally, look for any puddles or drainage around the compressor or leaks near the air handlers that aren’t condensation.  Recognizing these signals and scheduling a repair before a total shutdown can save you money and aggravation.

What should you expect from an air conditioning repair company?

So, you’ve spotted a problem with your system, and it’s time to call for a repair.  How will you know which company to choose in Brevard County?  Before you decide which repair service you’ll trust with your comfort and safety, here are some questions you should ask.

  • Do they offer straightforward pricing BEFORE the repair?
    • Aren’t you having a tough enough time without hidden costs?
  • Do they have parts in stock or fast access to inventory for minimal repair time?
    • How long do you really want to wait until your system’s fixed?
  • Do they offer 24 hour/7 day emergency service?
    • It’s Florida, it’s summer. Enough said.
  • Do they have expertise in all sorts of systems?
    • Not all A/C units are alike; you need a pro who can handle your system.
  • Do they offer a service maintenance plan that includes discounts on repairs?
    • Check out Cool Rays Comfort Club and see how they extend the life of your system and save you money.

Brevard County, just because it’s another humid, southern summer doesn’t mean you have to get caught in the hot seat. If your A/C is acting up, don’t wait until you have to replace the whole system. Remember air conditioners can be repaired. With a little bit of troubleshooting, calling right away when you see red flags, and signing up for regular maintenance with a company you trust, you’ll never have to lose your cool.
