Why Is My Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air?
It Might Be Working Normally
Before assuming something is wrong, consider this: heat pumps produce air that feels cooler than what a gas furnace delivers. Heat pump output typically ranges from 85-95°F, compared to 120-140°F from a furnace. On cooler mornings — even on the Space Coast — this can feel lukewarm rather than hot.
If the air coming from your vents is consistently in the 85-95°F range and your home is reaching the set temperature, your heat pump is likely working as designed.
The Defrost Cycle
Heat pumps periodically enter a defrost cycle to remove frost buildup from the outdoor coil. During defrost, the system temporarily switches to cooling mode, which means the indoor unit blows cooler air for 5-15 minutes. This is completely normal and happens more frequently in cold, humid conditions.
You’ll know it’s a defrost cycle if:
- The outdoor unit stops its fan temporarily
- You see steam rising from the outdoor unit
- The cool air episode is brief (under 15 minutes)
Common Problems That Need Attention
Low Refrigerant
Heat pumps use refrigerant to transfer heat. If there’s a leak, the system loses its ability to heat effectively. You may notice ice buildup on the outdoor unit or a gradual decline in heating performance.
Stuck Reversing Valve
The reversing valve switches the system between heating and cooling modes. If it gets stuck in cooling position, your heat pump will blow cold air when it should be heating. This requires professional repair.
Dirty Air Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the indoor coil, reducing heat transfer. This is the easiest fix — check and replace your filter first.
Thermostat Issues
Verify your thermostat is set to “heat” mode and that the temperature is set above the current room temperature. Also check that it’s not set to “fan only,” which circulates unheated air.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve checked the basics and your heat pump is still blowing cold air continuously, it’s time for a service call. A certified technician can test refrigerant levels, inspect the reversing valve, check electrical connections, and diagnose any underlying issues.
